Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim is a popular hill station destination in the East. This small town, lies atop a ridge, at an altitude of 5,800 ft, amidst a Himalayan setting, with the world"s third tallest peak Kanchenjunga at its east, and overlooking the river Ranikhola. Gangtok meaning lofty hill was said to have been a small village until it gained the status of an important pilgrimage centre with the building of the Enchey Monastery in 1840. In 1975 with the end of the monarchical rule, Sikkim was made an official state of India with its capital at Gangtok. Sightseeing includes Cottage Industry Emporium, Sikkim Research Institute of Tibetology, Deer Park, Permanent Flower Show, Enchey Monastery, Ridge Park and White Hall complex, Tashi View point(6 kms), Hanuman Tok (5 kms), Ganesh Tok, Himalayan Zoological Park
How to reach
Entry Permit: Foreigners visiting Gangtok must possess an Indian visa and must obtain Inner Line Permit (ILP) to visit Sikkim. The permits can be obtained from all Indian missions, Tourism Office, New Delhi, Sikkim Tourism Office, Calcutta and Sikkim Tourism Office, Siliguri.

Air: Nearest airport is Bagdogra in West Bengal (124 km). Helicopter service is available between Gangtok – Bagdogra. Rail: New Jalpaiguri (150 km) in West Bengal is the nearest railhead.

Road: Gangtok is connected by road with Bagdogra (124 km), New Jalpaiguri (150 km), Siliguri (115 km), Kalimpong (80km), Darjeeling (100 km), (pelling 120 km) etc.
Weather
Mercury levels range from an average maximum of 22°C in summer (March to June) to an average minimum of 4°C in winter during December to February. Observed maximum temperature during summer rarely crosses 25°C. Intense rainfalls in monsoon (July to September) causes landslides in this region. July month records maximum rainfalls.
Best Seasons
Best period to visit is September to June.
Saga Dawa, a very auspicious day for the Buddhists, is celebrated here with much enthusiasm during the end of May and early June. A huge procession of monks goes around Gangtok carrying the Holy Scriptures and is very attractive.
