Sri Kedarnathji shrine, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, is a scenic spot situated at an altitude of 3,581 mts above sea level near the head of river Mandakini, and is flanked by breathtaking snow-capped peaks. The present temple was built by Adi Shankaracharya. Kedarnath is the most remote of the Char Dham sites. The Temple is opened from April to October every year. Places to visit near Kedarnath include Shankaracharya Samadhi, Chorabari, Vasuki Tal, Son Prayag, Gaurikund, etc.
How to reach
It is a 15 km trek from Gaurikund. There is Helicopter service to Kedarnath from Agasthyamuni which is 65 km. Guptkashi, which is 32 km from Gaurikund is the major town nearby. Badrinath to Gaurikund is 220 km. Gaurikund to Uttarkashi is about 265 km. All these are to be reached only by road.
Weather
Summers (March to June) are very pleasant with moderate climate, with average around 18°C. Summers is ideal for all sight seeing and pilgrimage.
Monsoons (July to October) are accompanied with scanty rains and also temperature drops down to 15°C.
Winters (November to February) are chilly days with average minimum touching near 5°C. Minimum can touch sub zero levels and snow falling seen very often during winters. These months are perfect for travelers liking chilly climates.
Best Seasons
The temple is open from April to October. The best time to visit Kedarnath is from April to June. Woolen clothes are recommended round the year.
