Kumbakonam is one of the oldest towns in Tamilnadu and is famous for its Mahamaham festival celebrated once in 12 years in the Mahamaham tank. In the 7th Century it was the Capital of Chola Kings. It is called the 'Temple Town' of South India and is picturesquely located amidst the two rivers, Cauvery & Arasalar. The temples are massive depicting the architectural beauty of the ancient Indian structures. The Kumbeshwra temple, Sarangapani temple, Pateeswaram temple, Thiruvanlansuzi temple, Swamimalai temple and the Navagraha temples are some of the few great temples in and around the place. The town is also known for its intricately carved panchaloha idols, exquisite brass wares especially lamps, silk and betel leaves.

Kumbakonam is well connected by rail and road with major cities of south India. There are regular trains from Chennai and Mysore via Bangalore. Nearest airport is Trichy, which is about 96 km from Kumbakonam.

The best season to visit the Kumbakonam area is the post North-East Monsoon season, from mid-November to end-January. The festive air around Pongal, the harvest festival, lends plenty of additional colour.
